Barry Round Table helps to spread festive cheer

Barry Round Table, the group behind the Barry Santa Sleigh and Barry Beer Festival has spent December spreading festive cheer.

The group of 13 volunteers give up their evenings and weekends in December to bring Santa to the streets of Barry, on a brand new sleigh built by LCB Construction, 2012 flooring and pulled by 'Reindeer' from CJ Contract Hire.

On Saturday (14th), the group took a break from Santa visits to hold its annual Elderly Persons dinner at Barry Town United clubhouse. The event which is in its third year, aims to give 70 elderly people at risk of social isolation and loneliness this Christmas, a chance to get out, meet new people and celebrate Christmas together.

The event featured live music from a Vera Lynne tribute and Ben Dain-Smith, a three course meal, treats donated by local businesses, games of bingo and prize raffle, all of which was free of charge to those attending.

On Sunday, members of Barry Round Table made a donation of £500 of toys to the Big Wrap appeal, to help lift the pressure on families in the Vale, who struggle to afford Christmas. Making sure that no child wakes up on Christmas day, something which the group felt should happen to no family this Christmas.

Thanks to the support of Barry Round Table and the local communities, 1,500 toys will be under the tree for families across the Vale of Glamorgan on Chrismas morning.

Barry Round Table Chairman Matt Davies said "Christmas is a busy time of year with us, out almost every night with the Barry Santa Sleigh. Despite that, we still find time to spread a little extra festive cheer."

"Our Elderly Persons dinner and donations to campaigns such as the Big Wrap appeal are doable thanks to the generous support of local businesses, individuals and the community we serve, whom we'd like to thank."

Barry Round Table will continue to spread cheer in 2020, with the opportunity for twenty local organisations to receive £50 worth of items as part of its annual Santa's wish.
